Arco’s Road Redevelopment and Traffic Plan Progress
The imminent completion — although it will be difficult for the contractor to meet the August 10 deadline for the works, which are still ongoing with numerous small finishing touches — of the southern stretch of the circumvallation could prove to be the element capable of providing a decisive acceleration to the project aimed at redeveloping the right bank of the Sarca River between the bridge and the church.
The possibility of partially relocating the bypass traffic of Arco outside the area, and the consequent transfer of jurisdiction over via della Cinta from the province to the municipality, are viewed as very positive developments. These points were highlighted by assessors Stefano Bresciani and Sergio Dallanna in their response, made official the other evening in the city council chamber, to the inquiry made by Gloria Mirri. Mirri had asked to learn about the administration’s plans to improve the appearance of one of the city’s access points, which is characterized by a series of buildings in varying states of degradation.
Recovery Plan and Future Interventions
The recovery plan outlined in the Prg (Piano Regolatore Generale – General Planning Scheme) to regulate the development of a public park and an underground parking lot serving the historic center in the area between the river and the former Foro Boario (Cattle Market) site includes the demolition of the laundry and the former slaughterhouse, as well as the acquisition of the church building.
Recent developments in this area «offer hope for the possibility of positive intervention in the near term», Bresciani and Dallanna note. These include, besides improvements to traffic flow, the «parish’s willingness to free the building currently used as an oratory, either through sale or exchange»; the «clear intention of the laundry to relocate from its current location to a new area more suitable for its activities (see the new artisan area of S. Andrea)»; and a «scheduled (though not immediate) move of the fire brigade to the new barracks to be constructed south of Caneve».
Regarding this operation, Bresciani and Dallanna emphasize that «a minimum of discretion is appropriate, to avoid harmful “announcement effects,” which tend to generate false expectations or obstructive initiatives.»
