Brescia has been the scene of a significant operation against the ‘ndrangheta, leading to the arrest of 33 individuals and the seizure of assets worth over 1.8 million euros. This morning, law enforcement agencies, including the State Police and the Guardia di Finanza, executed a precautionary custody order issued by the investigating judge of the local court. The suspects hail from various Italian provinces as well as Spain, and they are accused of multiple offenses, including illegal possession of firearms and usury, aggravated by mafia methods. The investigation, initiated in September 2020 by the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Brescia – Anti-Mafia District Directorate, revealed the existence of a “locale” in the city linked to the “Alvaro” clan, involved in extortion and illicit trafficking.
Currently, searches are being conducted by around 300 law enforcement agents not only in Brescia but also in the surrounding provinces. Among those arrested is a nun, suspected of having acted as an intermediary between the members of the criminal group and prisoners. The investigations have shown that the organization was capable of not only committing traditional crimes but also engaging in illicit economic activities through fictitious companies in the scrap metal trade, generating invoices for non-existent transactions totaling approximately 12 million euros.
