The project for the asbestos landfill in Valeggio sul Mincio has faced a significant setback, as the regional technical committee for Environmental Impact Assessment (VIA) has rejected the counterarguments presented by the Progeco company. On Wednesday, August 6, the negative opinion previously expressed on June 25 was reaffirmed, highlighting issues related to environmental protection, water safety, and traffic safety. This outcome marks the conclusion of the procedure, barring any potential appeals to the Administrative Court (TAR), and represents a victory for the local community.
Mayor Alessandro Gardoni emphasized the importance of this result as a product of collective efforts to safeguard the territory and the health of citizens. He also reiterated the need for regulatory changes to absolutely prohibit the establishment of landfills in sensitive areas, such as aquifer recharge zones. Gianni Bertaiola from the Territorial Defense Committee also expressed satisfaction with the negative opinion, while warning that the risk of new projects remains due to exemptions in the Veneto Regional Waste Plan.
