Bardolino Reaches Out to Vittoriale, Calls for a Garda-Led Recovery Plan

The Municipality of Bardolino has pledged support to the Vittoriale degli Italiani following damage caused by severe weather in recent weeks in Gardone Riviera, with Mayor Daniele Bertasi saying the issue will be raised in the working tables for Bardolino’s bid to become Italian Capital of Culture 2029.

The storm triggered the collapse of several historic cypress trees, landslides, flooding and significant damage to key structures at the Vittoriale, including the main mast of the Nave Puglia, requiring major restoration and safety works. Bertasi said the response cannot rely only on directly involved bodies and should become a shared challenge across the Lake Garda system, positioning the Vittoriale as a heritage site for all communities around the lake.

Bardolino plans to bring the Vittoriale recovery into the broader discussion around its 2029 cultural candidacy, involving institutions, associations, professionals, cultural operators and local stakeholders. The municipality says it has already gathered expressions of interest from administrations and entities on all three shores, and is considering support from the business sector and private donors, alongside tools such as the Art Bonus, potentially with partners including Garda Unico – VisitGarda and other institutions.
