In the Lower Garda, construction work on the high-speed train project has been temporarily suspended to protect the nesting of the bee-eaters, colorful and protected birds. This decision was made after ornithologist and photographer Guido Parmeggiani from Sirmione reported the presence of nests on the clay walls formed at the construction site. On Wednesday, July 2, the provincial police of Brescia and the forest carabinieri of Salò secured the area, which is now designated for the nesting of the bee-eaters, in accordance with law 157/92.
The bee-eaters, migratory birds that arrive in Italy at the beginning of May, will depart to winter in Africa at the end of August. Parmeggiani emphasized how large construction projects can positively influence biodiversity by creating new habitats, as seen in the case of the clay walls rising up to three meters that have attracted at least 18 pairs of bee-eaters, forming a colony. The anticipated resumption of work will only be possible after the nesting season concludes.
