Bombardments on Villa Bassetti: Mussolini and the RSI at Lake Garda

An airstrike hit Villa Bassetti, the site of the German Embassy to the Italian Social Republic, located in Bornico, Toscolano Maderno. This event, which took place during World War II, was recently commemorated on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of Liberation. Although bombs were dropped on Villa Bassetti, there were no significant damages reported to the surrounding buildings, and the personnel present managed to escape before the impact, heading towards the Albergo Bella Riva.

Memoirs of the diplomat Eitel Friedrich Moellhausen suggest that the Allies were well-informed about Mussolini’s location and his workplaces around the lake. However, the bombings appeared to primarily target the German embassy rather than the seats of fascist power, indicating a deliberate strategy by the Allies. This event raises questions about the military and political priorities of the time, highlighting the role of Nazi Germany as the true enemy in the region.
