Borgo Garibaldi Church Renovation Underway with €200M Grant

Work on the renovation of the former Church of Discipline will begin shortly. This is the first phase aimed at safeguarding the building owned by the municipality located in Borgo Garibaldi, which is currently in a state of complete abandonment.

The mayor Armando Ferrari announced the decision to proceed well in advance of the initially expected timeline for the complex originally dedicated to Santa Maria della Misericordia. “We have received a grant of 200 million lira from the Fondazione Cariverona, allowing us to accelerate the start of the renovation of the Discipline,” the mayor explains.

“The initial intervention costs 304 million lira and involves the reconstruction and repair of the roof of the former sacred building, which is now deteriorating. Immediate action is necessary to prevent its collapse.”

Once the first phase (covering and wall consolidation, ed.) is completed, the Administration plans to proceed immediately—thanks to the scaffolding already in place—to the second stage, which involves the complete restoration of the Discipline, including the bell tower. The total cost of the entire project is expected to reach 1.147 billion lira.

It is clear that we are seeking additional forms of funding and contributions. The Foundation of the Cassa di Risparmio di Verona has also promised further support in 2002.”

Conservation and Cultural Enhancement Project

The conservation and cultural enhancement project for the Borgo Garibaldi building was drafted by architect Arturo Sandrini. Its goal is to adapt the former church for activities compatible with the historic and artistic character of the structure, namely as a social-cultural center with an exhibition hall—an advanced multifunctional space, usable as a large conference room with approximately one hundred seats, and also as an auditorium.

The project aims at restoring the Discipline in its entirety: from the roof to the interior vault, including necessary system updates, the attached residential unit, and the bell tower. The former sacred building, which in the 1980s even housed a bakery, was purchased some time ago by the municipality from private owners for just over half a billion lire.
