Borgo Redevelopment Plans Include Outdoor Theater and Green Space Expansion

Once, the Bigiona, the legendary train of the Verona-Caprino-Garda railway, arrived there. Later, it became the terminus and bus depot for scheduled services. Now, the lakeside area of Borgo is expected to become a green breathalloc, equipped for theater performances and conferences.

Indeed, the congress center has been located there for about twenty years, and now, on the other side of the public gardens facing the conference hall, an outdoor theater space should also be built. The project will be discussed at the city council meeting tomorrow evening at 9 PM, at the civic hall in via Colombo.

Details of the redevelopment project

The agenda includes the plan for the redevelopment of the green area between largo Pisanello, via San Francesco, the conference hall, and lungolago Regina Adelaide. This should be a complex initiative, aimed at redesigning the overall layout of the entire lakefront area of Borgo, including expanding the current public gardens, refurbishing the lungolago, and creating an outdoor theater space opposite the Terminus hotel.

“With this operation,” says Mayor Giorgio Comencini, “we will take another step forward in the process of upgrading the urban furniture and planning of our town. In particular, in the Borgo area, this intervention completes a broader project that has already included the renovation of the Memorial Park, the reopening of the congress center, and the refurbishment of the wooden pier.”

The plan discussed tomorrow evening in the council aims to identify a pedestrian pathway leading from the entrance of the congress center to a new performance structure intended to host summer tourist events, passing through the gardens.

Open-air theater project

In essence, a sort of open-air theater will be built to replace the current Pisanello square, which today appears as a spartan paved open space with an unsightly and bulky traffic divider at its center. A tiered seating area, just slightly higher than the current street level, should be constructed there.

Additionally, bathrooms and equipment storage rooms are expected to be accommodated underneath the terraced seating. “The structure,” as architect Piero Vantini, the urban planning councilor, previously told us, “will be positioned in a way that blends as much as possible into the surrounding environment, well camouflaged within the greenery.” The outdoor theater should in some way be absorbed into the greenery of the congress palace gardens, which will extend towards the area now occupied by the square.

Renovation of surrounding areas and interventions along the lungolago

“Additionally,” Vantini mentioned, “the area surrounding the municipal building in via San Francesco will be revisited and upgraded, in order to better define some parking spots and give a more decorous appearance to the building, which is also planned for renovation.” Regarding the lungolago, the project seems to propose a slight elevation of the current roadway to match the level of the sidewalk.

Throughout the area, moreover, asphalt will give way to stone and porphyry. Angelo Peretti
