Brescia Airport Funds at Risk as D’Annunzio Faces Uncertainty
All passengers heading to Rome have been grounded since Sunday. As expected, in Verona, only the flights from Catullo are affected and not those from Montichiari.
The regional secretary of the Cisl Trasporti, Dario Ballotta, is firm in his stance, urging Brescia residents to rebel because, for the realization of the D’Annunzio Airport in Montichiari, the Chamber of Commerce and the Province have allocated 30 billion lire, which belong to the community, with the aim of providing a service, creating jobs, and ensuring development.
And now, what will happen to those funds, aside from being completely unprofitable? The union leader sees the only solution as revoking the temporary management concession of D’Annunzio granted to Catullo by the ministry, through a competitive bidding process.
“Many will compete because the runway and the location are very attractive.” But in the town of Bassa, even if it is spring, it is shrouded in absolute fog.
Amid exchanges of accusations, circulating rumors that are denied, hopes that only carry the illusion of possibility, and promises that now sound false, only two flights to London remain listed on the board. Meanwhile, workers, with the sword of Damocles hanging over their jobs, stand still for two hours each shift.
Situation and Future Prospects
From Verona, it is reported that “there are no prospects in the short term”; operators are being sought but are not found. It is very difficult: “After all, even Leali, a Brescia native, left with his Air Dolomiti.”
The provincial councilor, Vigilio Bettinsoli, blames Roman delays. Accusations of competition over charter flights, involving discounts, are directed at Orio al Serio.
Meanwhile, D’Annunzio is sinking. The only optimist in this tangled situation appears to be Montichiari mayor Gianantonio Rosa: perhaps now that the bottom has been touched, something will move, he believes, “there will be a shake-up.”
