Brescia and the Piazza Loggia Massacre: Memory and Justice in Terrorism
The 51st anniversary of the Piazza Loggia massacre was commemorated in Brescia with a significant message from the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella. On this occasion, the President emphasized that the terrorist attack which occurred on May 28, fifty-one years ago, aimed to destabilize the Republic and weaken democracy. Mattarella expressed deep condolences for the victims and their families, highlighting the importance of collective memory in strengthening a community of free individuals.
In his address, the President also underscored the courageous response of the city of Brescia and its democratic institutions in the face of subversive violence. He recalled that, although the path to justice has been long and difficult, the values of freedom and democracy have prevailed over attempts at intimidation. Finally, Mattarella acknowledged the fundamental role of the victims’ families association in keeping the historical memory alive, expressing hope that such testimony can inspire future generations.
