2001 Harvest Results and Characteristics of Brescia’s Novello Wines
Following a harvest that generated high expectations for a five-star vintage among all producers and industry experts in our province, Brescia’s Novello has entered the market with an exceptionally high-quality profile.
The reduction in production volume (around 162,000 bottles) additionally confirms the qualities of the harvest, which saw many producers redirect their red grapes toward higher-value productions.
There is also the trusted mark of the Provveditoria, established in 1989 to promote the product. Today, it includes about twenty wineries from all Brescia’s production areas, representing approximately 70% of the Novello produced in Brescia.
«Our mark signifies our commitment to offering consumers something extra —» explained Claudio Franzoni, president of the Provveditoria. «Our producers have set a particularly strict standard, which requires at least 60% of the processing to be performed using the carbonic maceration technique and mandates manual grape harvests.»
In Brescia, Novello production is tailored to demand, meaning wineries mostly work on a reservation basis. This success story, within the national context, has seen production volumes surpass 18 million bottles this year, a 7% increase over 2000.
