Brescia Tunnel Construction to Improve Transit Between Trentino and Garda
Worksite setup has been completed, and at Rocchetta di Riva del Garda, work is expected to begin next Monday, when the actual construction of the tunnel will start. This tunnel is anticipated to provide a definitive solution for transit between Trentino and Brescia, in the northern part of Benaco.
By mid-July, vehicles should be able to pass safely along that stretch of road, while additional finishing works will be carried out during the winter. From next summer onward, any issues are expected to only arise further south, within Brescia’s territory.
Having secured the construction of the tunnel in record time from the Trentino side (barring unforeseen circumstances), local administrators and hotel operators around Garda are now looking toward the upcoming weeks. No definitive decisions have yet been made regarding traffic on the Gardesana, which has been interrupted since the December 22nd landslide, a few hundred meters south of Riva.
Transportation is still being maintained via ferries and boats. The matter will be discussed in detail this evening during the assembly of the Montane Community Park (Villa di Gargnano at 8:30 PM).
Meanwhile, the minority group of «Alto Garda Solidale» has submitted a motion to the President of the District Authority, Bruno Faustini. “Discomfort among residents and tourism operators is increasing, but there have been no specific meetings regarding the Gardesana: this prevents strategic discussion within the executive board,” the minority asserts, continuing to demand “a minimum opening that makes the road passable as soon as possible.”
Interventions and Temporary Suspensions
Not only do the inconveniences caused by the closure at Rocchetta persist, but works at Forbisicle (south of the Campione tunnel) will continue until March 20th, with the usual closing hours: 8:30 AM – 12:30 PM; 1:30 PM – 4:30 PM.
This is still not enough. Just yesterday, the GARDESANA was inspected by engineers from Anas. They will decide whether to proceed with an additional complete shutdown of the State Road (expected to last at least a week) to remove a large boulder in the Forbisicle area.
In the meantime, work at Nanzel (south of Limone) to secure the area has been completed. The next step is awaiting approval for 24-hour passage, albeit with alternating traffic regulated by a traffic light, pending the full restoration of the roadway.
