Castelnuovo del Garda will host a public meeting on Wednesday 23 September at 20:30 at the Sala Civica XI Aprile 1848, focused on the geological secrets of the subsoil and the origins of the lake. The event will present the first results and the territorial objectives of ICDP-DOVE (Drilling Overdeepened Alpine Valleys), an international scientific research programme that studies major Alpine valleys through deep stratigraphic drilling.
The public appointment is part of a five-day scientific conference bringing together geologists and researchers from Italian and international universities in Castelnuovo del Garda. The programme aims to reconstruct the geological history of the basin over the last million years, with the meeting offering the local community an overview of the project’s direction and early findings.
Three field researchers will illustrate the project’s aims and potential implications for the Benaco area: Giancarlo Scardia (UNESP – Universidade Estadual Paulista in Brazil and CNR-GEO in Italy), Giovanni Monegato (CNR-GEO in Padua) and Markus Fiebig (University BOKU in Vienna), with Davide Sandrini, mayor of Castelnuovo del Garda, in attendance. The research network includes the University of Padua, University BOKU of Vienna, University of Bern and University of Fribourg, CNR-GEO and UNESP, as well as Regione Veneto and local water-cycle management bodies AGS (Azienda Gardesana Servizi) and Acque Veronesi. According to the project, deep valleys carved by glaciers during the Quaternary and later filled with sediments act as a natural archive for reading the alternation of glacial and interglacial phases, while the drill cores also provide information on the hydrogeological structure of deep aquifers, groundwater circulation and the seismic response of the ground to support planning for the Garda water basin.
