Castiglione Celebrates Court Victory Over Landfill Threat

Once again, the most important topic of the Castiglione delle Stiviere city council was the landfill issue, at least for the first part. In fact, after the standard communications, the ecology councillor David Beruffi briefed the council on the outcome of the Brescia Tar court’s ruling regarding the appeals filed by the Municipality and the companies.

All the council groups expressed satisfaction with the outcome, which puts Castiglione in a position of safety. However, there were some sharp comments from the mayor’s benches directed at the opposition, accused of not trusting the administration’s decisions on policies to defend against the landfill.

Projects and Victory Celebrations

The council reaffirmed that it will continue with its sports center project, including acquiring the land. Meanwhile, on Sunday, Castiglione will celebrate its victory over the landfill.

The Anti-Landfill Committee, chaired by Giovanni Tosi, is organizing an aperitif with refreshments from 11 a.m. to noon along via Cesare Battisti, between the town hall and the Basilica of San Luigi, with a communal table and street closure.

The invitation to participate is extended to the entire population, and all associations, groups, and organizations that fought in this battle to protect the environment, health, and jobs are welcome — most notably the appellants to the Tar.

Context of the Pirossina Case

The threat of the landfill was thwarted thanks to the efforts of numerous parties who opposed the regional resolution approved in December 1997: these include the Municipalities of Castiglione, Medole, and Castel Goffredo, Golden Lady, local agrifood companies, the Province of Mantova, and, of course, the Anti-Landfill Committee.

It should be recalled that the Pirossina case was widely covered in the press, with hundreds of articles over the past three years, from the regional council resolution of December 1997 until the Brescia Tar’s ruling last month, which annulled the environmental permit issued to Environmental Geo.

Celebrations and Flyers

The Committee and its president Tosi hope for broad participation from citizens in next Sunday’s celebration aperitif: the goal is to hold a small community festivity, because this victory was certainly helped by the mobilization of the people.

In the coming days, two flyers will be distributed: one to promote the event, and another to briefly explain the reasons behind the Tar’s decision to the citizens.
