Castiglione Politicians Clash Over Neighborhood Crime and Urban Issues
The Mayor Sigurtà at least understands that the true problem of the Five Continents is health and sanitation rather than public order; his majority has not. The leader of the Democratic Party (Partito Democratico – PD) in the Castelione city council, Giovanni Saviola, officially responds to the proposal to establish a control commission for at-risk neighborhoods, advanced by the Lega Nord and supported by Castiglione Domani through a statement by its political secretary Mario Tonello.
Criticism of the control proposal and crime data
“It seems to me,” said Saviola, “that the majority and Tonello — have not understood what the real problem is. If criminal acts occur, the law enforcement agencies will act as they always have: the data, which show a significant decrease in crimes this year, prove that the correct position is certainly not that of those proposing a ‘holy commission’. And what powers should this commission have to do what, until now, carabinieri, urban police, and city council have not been able to accomplish?”
Urban and societal issues
According to Saviola, the most serious problem, beyond health and sanitation, affecting at-risk neighborhoods is linked to urban planning and Castiglione’s society: “There are no more free Peep areas, and moreover, not a single subdivision within the Prg has started. This blockage has led to an increase in rents, which now reach nearly 15,000 lire per square meter per month. Only concrete actions in this area, addressing all residents working in Castiglione, can initiate a redevelopment of degraded neighborhoods, which would also promote public order and the principles of civility we aim to uphold. The mayor should raise the issue in the appropriate forums, and our constructive contribution will be available.”
