Castiglione’s Piazzale Repubblica Gets New Signage and Traffic Reorganization
Piazzale Repubblica, known to many Castiglionesi as Olimpo, is undergoing a transformation. Currently, on the mayor’s orders, the signage—both horizontal and vertical—that regulates vehicle circulation is being completely revised.
The head of the Polizia Municipale, Aldo Aresti, confirms this. “We have decided to bring order to this square,” Aresti explains. “It was no longer possible to continue without any discipline, allowing the first cars to arrive in the morning to park wherever they wanted, creating confusion and blocking passageways.”
Indeed, without signage, the early arrivals set the parking rules, and the direction of vehicle movement remained at the discretion of drivers.
Interventions and Redevelopment
To redesign Piazzale Repubblica, the area will remain closed for several days until the work is completed. The hope is to reopen it on Saturday, the market day.
The ecological oasis will be reorganized with flower containers; there will be granite flowerbeds, which are less unsightly than the yellow ones; new vertical signs will be installed; and parking spaces will be marked in white without the long stripes that are inappropriate for a stone pavement.
Changes to Traffic Flow
Regarding traffic, when entering from via Chiassi, vehicles will need to keep to the right and make a counterclockwise circuit around the outer perimeter of the square.
There will also be a central transit corridor, which must always be traveled from right to left, to re-enter the exit route.
