Today, in Desenzano, an important assembly is taking place under the auspices of the UN agency for cultural heritage, focusing on the climate emergency threatening the UNESCO sites of Lake Garda. The meeting, which will be held in the Peler hall of Palazzo Todeschini at 7 PM and will continue until Wednesday in Gavardo, brings together Italian and European experts to discuss the safeguarding of prehistoric pile-dwelling sites in the Alpine region. These sites, designated as World Heritage in 2011, include 111 settlements across six European countries and five Italian regions, with a notable 19 locations in Italy, eight of which are situated on Lake Garda. The meeting will highlight the issues related to the water emergency affecting these significant historical artifacts. Participants will address the consequences of prolonged droughts and flooding caused by intense rainfall, which jeopardize the preservation of archaeological materials. The situation is critical: last year, the peat was too dry, while this year it has been excessively wet, hindering excavation campaigns. Therefore, it is essential to develop a system to regulate soil moisture in order to protect this valuable cultural heritage. Italian Version
