Comincioli Plaque Returns to Toscolano Maderno After 80 Years

A commemorative identification plate belonging to Giulio Comincioli, an Italian Alpine soldier from Gargnano (born in 1915), has been found in the former POW camp area in northern-eastern Poland, shedding new light on his World War II fate. Comincioli was arrested after refusing to cooperate with Nazi-fascism following the events of 8 September 1943, captured at Colle Isarco, and deported to Stalag I-B/PR in Prostki, where he remained until his return to Italy in June 1945.

The tag was recovered on 12 January 2025, buried in soil and snow at the former camp site by the historical-exploratory association Jaćwież. The discovery has helped his family reconstruct a chapter of his life that had long been unknown. In recent weeks, the Prime Minister’s Office also accepted the request to award him the Medaglia d’Onore alla memoria (Honor Medal for remembrance), with the ceremony scheduled for 21 September 2026 at 10:30 at the Gioito barracks in Brescia, during the Italian Internees’ Day.
