Two weeping willows have recently been planted along the lakeside in Salò, in memory of Greta Nedrotti and Umberto Garzarella, who tragically lost their lives four years ago in a boating accident. The commemoration ceremony will take place on Thursday, June 19, at 6:30 PM, near the new trees, where friends and family will gather to remember the two young residents of Lake Garda, victims of a fatal collision with a motorboat while they were aboard their fishing boat. The event profoundly impacted the local communities and led to the approval of Law 123/2023 on boating homicide.
The incident occurred on the evening of June 19 when a motorboat, driven by Patrick Kassen, struck the stationary vessel offshore. The drivers were identified by the Carabinieri the following day but quickly returned to Germany. Kassen was sentenced to four years and six months, while the owner, Christian Teissman, received a sentence of two years and eleven months; both sentences were upheld on appeal. This tragic event sparked a strong mobilization within the community to reform boating safety laws, culminating in the introduction of new legislation that equates boating homicide with vehicular homicide.
