Concerns Mount Over Narrow Roundabout Hindering Traffic and Safety
The roundabout continues to raise concerns. The maneuvering difficulties for large vehicles cause frequent complaints, so much so that Mayor Luca Sebastiano’s initiative to summon the designer for an on-site inspection was well received. The inconveniences experienced so far are not few, and it is uncertain whether the effort has been worth it. Everyone hopes so.
Operator Opinions and Critical Issues
Here’s how some local business operators, who deal daily with the town’s traffic, view the situation. “The roundabout is too narrow and doesn’t allow us to turn easily with our trucks and vans,” states Claudio Bertoldi, a fruit merchant. “Especially when arriving from Bardolino and needing to turn towards Verona, onto the Verona-Lake provincial road. Then there’s the sidewalk, which protrudes too much and reduces the width of the carriageway.”
The most annoyed by this French-style roundabout are truck drivers. They shouldn’t be traveling on Gardesana, but when there’s no ban, as is the case now, they are among the first to use the highway. The fact remains that they only pass through there with great effort, jumping onto the sidewalk.
Safety and Traffic Criticisms
“Every day, I hear the same complaints,” says Renato Battistoni, a gas station attendant. “And there’s so much frustration among drivers. They say everyone, even a child, can tell that the roundabout is narrow and insufficient. There needs to be more lane space, fewer sidewalks, less congestion inside the circle. If it stays like this, instead of facilitating traffic flow, it will cause endless discomfort.”
“Even the road maintenance technicians from Anas,” Battistoni confesses, “who often come here for refueling, say that as it’s currently structured—pending the completion of the work—the roundabout certainly doesn’t seem to function properly.”
Area Situation and Ongoing Construction
There’s also the area near the escarpment, located on the Verona-Lake provincial road on the right side when coming from Verona. Before the construction of the roundabout, this was the roadway allowing those from Verona to immediately merge onto the main road heading toward Bardolino.
Now, the entire area is supposed to become a garden. However, many believe that maintaining the road would have facilitated a quick traffic reduction toward Bardolino and Garda. “It’s mid-February, and no one knows when the work will be completed,” says a shopkeeper in the historic center. “Easter is just around the corner. In two months exactly, it will be Easter, and it’s our first major tourist event after months of inactivity.”
Traffic is expected to be heavy, and current forecasts do not give us much hope. According to merchants, it would be worthwhile for the mayor to promptly promote a meeting with Anas and the Province to undertake the necessary actions to complete the works quickly and optimize traffic flow results.
