Confesercenti Warns of Rising Energy Costs and Bill Increases Threatening Businesses

Energy price hikes following the Iran conflict have significantly increased wholesale electricity and gas costs, with prices rising 24% and nearly 33% respectively within 18 days from February 28. Projections suggest that if these levels persist until the end of 2026, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in commerce, tourism, and services could face a total bill of €3.8 billion, nearly €900 million more than in 2025.

The study indicates average additional costs per business, such as €2,700 for supermarkets, €529 for minimarkets, €1,010 for bars, and €2,723 for 30-room hotels. It also forecasts a potential €4 billion reduction in consumer spending, with Confesercenti president Nico Gronchi emphasizing that energy and gas costs are structural burdens impacting both businesses and households.
