Conservation Effort Focuses on Catfish Species at Cisano di Bardolino Meeting
Regional authorities and industry stakeholders convened on March 30th to address the growing issue of invasive catfish in Lake Garda. The meeting, held at Casetto di Cisano di Bardolino, highlighted increasing catches of the highly adaptable and predatory species, which is already being commercialized in Northern Europe at €2.50–€2.70 per kilogram, suggesting potential for a structured fishery to benefit local fishermen.
Proposed measures include supporting local commercial fishing through equipment upgrades, utilizing FEAMP funds for temperature-controlled storage during summer months, and engaging with Ispra to develop a specific plan for cormorant management. Participants discussed operational strategies for an integrated approach to these environmental and economic challenges.
