Construction Begins on Riva del Garda Tunnel as Work Progresses
After the tender, construction sites have begun at Rocchetta in Riva del Garda. The confirmation that things on the Gardesana are moving in the right direction was given by Claudio Bortolotti, general manager and head of Civil Protection for the Province of Trento, to Battista Martinelli, mayor of Limone.
The Altogardesano administrator represents the stakeholder most directly interested in seeing the green light for the execution of the important project, which for the past couple of months has kept tourism operators and residents on edge.
The details of the work have been public for some time: discussions have been ongoing since the landslide blocked the State Road, on Christmas Eve. Initially marked by uncertainties and refusals, then partial concessions, culminating in a trip to Rome to meet Undersecretary for Public Works Antonio Bargone, who finally unlocked the situation.
Status and Details of the Construction Site
In recent days, the work has been contracted to a couple of Trentino companies, which by July will install the tunnel: 960 meters of excavation in rock, with an additional 100 meters of gallery at both the south and north entry points of the new tunnel.
The efficiency of the Trentino companies was first demonstrated by the punctual opening of the construction sites. Now, the mountain will be drilled from both the north and south. Additionally, about halfway through the tunnel, further works will commence aimed at both ends, to reduce overall completion time.
The raw phase of the works is expected to be completed — barring unforeseen problems — by summer, with temporary lighting and ventilation. Final finishes and finishing touches will be carried out at a later date.
