Controversy Over Traffic Signs at Lake Garda Sparks Regional Debate
On the yellow signs placed throughout the lower Sarca area, urging drivers heading towards Limone to make the round of the lake, it has become a battleground.
Reactions and the stance of operators
While on the Brescia shore, tourism and economic operators have already held the first “war council”, there are also some on the Trentino side of Lake Garda who stand beside them: it is city councilor Ivo Gentilini.
“A wrong decision,” he fumes, “both for their economy and ours. You will see, the negative results will arrive already by Easter.”
“The signs,” he explains, “should have informed about the ferry service, explained the waiting times, and given tourists options to choose. Instead, I wonder if those signs are legally acceptable.”
Criticisms of the measures adopted
“This approach not only harms tourism on the Brescia side but, by reflection, will also heavily impact Riva itself. The possible solutions? First of all, reopen the western Gardesana at all costs, maybe two to three times a day, for an hour and a half, with police presence.
Create “windows,” in other words, that allow part of the traffic to be diverted. Then, rationalize the boarding process, ensuring a constant police presence at Riva’s dock. Efforts could be made to quickly activate the Retellino ferry terminal in the Tempesta area.”
From there, only heavy vehicles could depart, for example: they would reach Limone in just 10-15 minutes without congesting Riva. Yet, the institutions are handling this situation shamefully: is it possible that no one realizes the terrible damage that will result for the entire economy?
Merchants, artisans, hoteliers, wholesalers: no category will be spared. And what about seasonal workers? How many will have to stay home? I wonder where the labor unions are right now.
Always ready to fight for even two workers, because now they are not making their voices heard in front of hundreds of jobs at risk?”
