Court Ruling Closes and Wins Battle Against Pirossina Landfill

“I believe that with a ruling like this, our anti-landfill battle can be considered definitively closed and, above all, won.” These are words of great satisfaction from Giovanni Tosi, the president of the Comitato antidiscarica di Castiglione.

The Tar (Regional Administrative Court) ruling annulled the regional resolution that had approved the project by Ambiental Geo for a waste landfill for toxic and hazardous waste at Pirossina. Tosi elaborates: “Fortunately, the Tar issued a judgment that addressed and analyzed important points.”

He refers specifically to formal errors in the convening of the services conference by the Lombardy Region and other procedural irregularities. However, what matters most is that it also considers environmental aspects.

He mentions the Provincial Cave Plan and states that for a long time, the Pirossina site, along with the surrounding area, had been considered too vulnerable to support the presence of such an installation. This is probably the most substantial aspect of the battle we fought, which makes any other appeal by Ambiental Geo unlikely.

The Final Thanks and Conclusion

Tosi now considers the mission of the Comitato antidiscarica complete: “Now that I believe we have won definitively, I cannot refrain from expressing some thanks: to Maresciallo Sorrentino and P.M. Rosina, without whom the precautionary seizure of the quarry would not have taken place, and probably the landfill would have already been started.”

He also thanks the press, which, with its attention to the issue, prevented anyone from acting unseen.”
