Two young students from the “Gabriele D’Annunzio” Middle School in Salò have recently received a prestigious award at the national literary competition organized by the Italo Calvino Comprehensive Institute in Catania. Angelica Cavagnini and Margherita Mondinelli were honored for their stories during a ceremony held at the Palazzo della Cultura in Catania.

The competition, which celebrated the centenary of the birth of the renowned writer Italo Calvino, was promoted by the Municipality of Catania and saw enthusiastic participation from numerous students from all over Italy. The competition was open to students in the fourth and fifth grades of primary school and the three grades of middle school.

Success of the Competition

The headmaster of the Italo Calvino Institute, Salvatore Impellizzeri, along with the teachers of the “Reading” group, including Vice Principal Giusi Bruno and teachers Giusy Grasso, Patrizia D’Amico, Ina Caudullo, Lucia Ferrito, Rosa Platania, Simona Mammana, Teresa Garaffo, and Lella Seminerio, expressed great satisfaction with the success of the initiative. The jury received several hundred stories from all over the country, making the task of selecting the winners particularly challenging.

Theme of the Competition

The stories had to reflect the theme chosen for the edition: “Faithfulness and Purity of Heart,” inspired by the preface written by Italo Calvino for his “Italian Folktales.” This theme allowed young writers to explore values deeply rooted in Italian culture through their stories.

Awarding the Winners

In the section dedicated to the third grades of middle school, Tommaso Gitto from the “De Amicis” Comprehensive School in Mirabella Imbaccari (Catania) took first place. Angelica Cavagnini and Margherita Mondinelli came in second with their distinctive stories.

The two students from Salò demonstrated remarkable narrative talent and interpretive abilities in addressing the themes proposed by the competition. This recognition represents not only a personal achievement for the young writers but also a source of pride for the entire educational community of the “Gabriele D’Annunzio” Middle School in Salò.
