Desenzano Municipal Police 2000: Crime, Traffic, and Security Initiatives

Overall Situation and Activities of the Municipal Police of Desenzano in 2000

Fewer violations of the Highway Code (one thousand fewer compared to 1999), an increase in criminal offenses and traffic accidents, the latter quadrupling since 1998. In summary, these are the key data of the 2000 activities of the Municipal Police of Desenzano, presented yesterday by the delegated councilor, Achille Benedetti, the commander Carlalberto Presicci, and vice-president Claudia Bosio.

However, Desenzano is facing a new emergency, it almost seems unnecessary to mention it: crime. That has recently exploded with new, dramatic episodes.

Therefore, 380 million lire have been allocated—200 million from the Municipality and 180 million from the Region—to set up a security system to counter the criminal offensive. Control systems with cameras, purchase of a mobile unit, establishment of a new operational center, but above all, the deployment of nine new police officers through a public competition scheduled for the coming days.

In total, as Benedetti assures, the Urban Police staff will increase to 27-28 officers.

Concerns and Anti-Illegal Immigration Initiatives

“But I would like to emphasize,” added the municipal councilor, “that the phenomenon of illegal migrants must also be fought within our own ranks, among many of our esteemed fellow citizens who host or facilitate their introduction, and then demand exorbitant rents.”

It is precisely thanks to the decisive contribution of Commander Presicci’s men in recent days that illegal renting activities conducted by the owner of a restaurant and guesthouse have been halted.

Regarding the future security plan, which is expected to be implemented before summer, among the future projects of the Urban Police is also a large-scale control of the public ports and perhaps even the coastline, with the deployment of a boat.

However, Benedetti tempers enthusiasm about this, because to deliver a good service, equipment and personnel rotation are necessary.

Educational Activities and Operational Results

Another noteworthy initiative is the educational activity on the main rules of the Highway Code, carried out in the town’s elementary and middle schools. This activity has yielded excellent results.

Going into more detail, Commander Presicci’s team issued 13,700 fines, generating nearly 800 million lire for the municipal treasury, recorded 180 traffic accidents including two fatal ones, reported 91 people to judicial authorities, who received 68 investigations from the same urban police, and also issued dozens of environmental-related tickets.

The confiscated driver’s licenses numbered 13 with 2,250 vehicles checked, 63 vehicle registration certificates were revoked, and 15 vehicles were seized. The urban police officers covered nearly 87,000 kilometers.

It is also worth noting that patrols are in service during nighttime hours, especially in the summer.
