Desenzano Proposed as Alternative Route for Upper Garda Tourists
It is not yet entirely certain that Desenzano may become, for a few months, the terminal of the highway route that Austrian and German tourists might take to reach the upper Garda resorts, from Gargnano to Limone, while the tunnel between Riva and Limone is completed.
This is, at least, the impression of Limone’s mayor, Giambattista Martinelli, who will meet in the coming days with the mayor of Riva and other authorities. “I am trying to propose to the Trentino mayor to make available the large parking lot, usually used during fairs, for tourists arriving from Austria and Germany to leave their cars.”
“Once they leave their cars,” continues Martinelli, “tourists could reach Limone via Navigarda’s ferry boats. Certainly, this is a proposal that, once brought to the negotiating table, could be improved and refined.” So far, the mayor of the town in upper Garda has expressed concern, especially due to the closure of the state road connecting it to Riva.
As recalled, in recent days Bresciaoggi published news about the possibility — Desenzano — discussed during the meeting held in the Trentino town regarding traffic issues caused by the Gardesana closure.
The question essentially is: how and where to divert buses and private cars of vacationers who need to reach Limone? Using the water link between Torri del Benaco and Maderno, or continuing on the highway until the A4 toll booth in Desenzano to then follow Gardesana to the destination?
From Riva, representatives of law enforcement, institutions, and tourism entities discussed this idea. The mayor of Limone himself confirmed that the proposal was brought to the table but considers it unlikely to be feasible. Or rather, he fears the possible repercussions.
Indeed, Martinelli warns of the danger that many German tourists, especially those traveling with children, might not be particularly enthusiastic about adding an extra two or three hours to their planned schedule. And this is an optimistic forecast.
This is because, in Desenzano, they would encounter traffic jams and slowdowns all the way to Gargnano and Limone. Nevertheless, despite these reservations, operators meeting in Riva might insist on pursuing this solution.
