Desenzano Water Management Turns to Consorzio Garda Uno Amid Regulatory Changes
After urban waste management, the capital of Garda is attempting to entrust the Consorzio Garda Uno special company with the management of the integrated water cycle. The City Council has been called to approve the draft agreement.
“For the moment, nothing will change,” clarifies Felice Anelli, the mayor. “This is a management assignment for a transitional period of 18 months. The company will limit itself to coordinating staff, leaving the rest unchanged. Decisions on tariffs remain under the jurisdiction of the Comune.”
This is nonetheless a first step in that direction, driven by the decisions that the Parliament is about to enact. In fact, a law is under discussion in the Senate that establishes a reorganization of these services.
Future regulations and management methods
The most important change for Municipalities is that direct management will no longer be allowed. The assignment to external companies or consortia should occur, once the law is definitively approved, through an European public procurement tender.
This is precisely the concern the Municipal Administration of the city aims to avoid. Until now, a direct and prudent management of the aqueduct, sewers, and purification has allowed desenzanesi residents to pay notably low tariffs, especially when compared to those of other Municipalities, including others in the Garda area, which have opted for external management services.
It should also be noted that Desenzano, in recent years, thanks to the commitment of the Administrations that have taken turns leading the municipality, has invested significant resources in upgrading the plants and pipelines of the distribution network.
Plants and development of the water network
The current water needs of the 23,000 residents and tourists staying in Desenzano are met by a plant located on the hill of Montecroce. Here, water drawn from the lake is conveyed through two intakes located at the Desenzanino and in the Piccadilly area.
After the filtration and purification process using the ” ionization ” system, the water is gravity-fed into the pipelines of the network. External zones also include wells located respectively in San Martino and Tassinara.
The Municipality is investing several million euros to strengthen the plant. Work is underway to build a new lakeside intake (designed by the Left-wing Executive) in the Marina del Vo’ area.
The well in Tassinara will also be upgraded by creating storage tanks to supply residents in the area, especially those who will reside there following the approval of several new housing developments.
