Elderly Residents Criticize Lakefront Redevelopment Over Lack of Social Spaces

There are only two days left until the official presentation, but the project to redevelop the lakefront area already raises some initial controversial questions. These are posed by the elderly residents of the district who use the initiative “Incontriamoci a Miralago” (“Let’s Meet at Miralago”) and who are deeply concerned about the future of the structure on the lakeshore.

Concerns of the elderly regarding the redevelopment

“Having learned that the project for the lakefront area prepared by the Comune di Riva does not include adequate spaces for their socialization and recreation activities in the beautiful park of the former Miralago colony — they state in a letter addressed to the mayor, the district president, and the provincial councilor for social and health policies — the elderly are protesting because, once again, their needs are being overlooked. The importance of creating gathering spaces that should be expanded and developed is being ignored, forgetting, on the part of politicians, the commitment of these individuals who have worked hard in the workforce, in society, and in their families.”

“This commitment has brought benefits that are now enjoyed by the entire community. We respectfully and firmly ask that the needs of the elderly be considered and call on the municipal, district, and provincial administrations to provide suitable spaces for senior activities, spaces that cannot be derived from solutions inappropriate to their age.” Dozens of signatures follow.

The position of Vittorio Agnini

A warning call, therefore, joined by that of Vittorio Agnini, head of the Senior Citizens Coordination of the C9, who contributed to drafting the document: “We read in the newspapers that attention has been paid to the needs of athletes and tourists, to aesthetic and architectural aspects… but no one has thought about the elderly and their needs! And more than for today’s seniors — we are fighting for the seniors of the future: what fate awaits them?”
