Esenta Wastewater Plant: Mantua Towns Demand Assurances for the Chiese River

A new wastewater treatment plant for Lake Garda—“Depuratore Esenta”—is set to be built in Esenta di Lonato, near the Castiglione delle Stiviere border, with an estimated investment of €314.5 million. The project was presented on 30 July to the Mantuan municipalities of Asola, Acquanegra sul Chiese, Casalmoro and Canneto sull’Oglio, which are reviewing the documents to assess potential impacts on the Chiese river basin and are asking to take part in the services conference.

The municipalities’ checks focus on the river’s condition during low-water periods, the effects of the discharge on water quality, and safety systems in the event of breakdowns or heavy rainfall, including implications for irrigated agriculture and residents’ health. The plant will be delivered in three lots between 2028 and 2034, and during the irrigation season treated water is expected to supply about 700 hectares of farmland; any portion not reused would be returned to the environment via a discharge into the Chiese near Carpenedolo.
