Fiavet Summit at Lake Garda Addresses Tourism Crisis and Industry Impact

The war, the Linate plane crash, and the attacks in the United States prompt reflections of all kinds, not least those related to the tourism economy.

For this reason, an important summit of the Federazione Italiana Associazioni Imprese Viaggi e Turismo (Fiavet) will be held during the weekend at Riva, at the Palacongressi Fiera.

The event, initially scheduled to take place in the Moroccan city of Agadir, was then quickly relocated to Lake Garda following the American events of September 11 last year.

Event details and context

The significant summit will be held on the high lake between October 11 and 13, and the organizers aim to offer an opportunity for discussion and analysis at a time that, for tourism, appears more challenging than ever.

These reflections could also concern the Garda area, which is closely linked to tourism.

Regarding Fiavet, it is a giant organization encompassing 6,500 travel agencies spread throughout Italy.

There are 8,500 retail outlets employing a total of 40,000 people.

At Riva, to underline the importance of the event, as many as 450 industry professionals are expected next week.

Economic impact and consequences

Fiavet and the Garda event represent a significant occasion, considering the overall turnover, which amounts to approximately 25,000 billion lire, including sales of tourist services, as well as ticketing services (airlines, bus companies, railways).

It is also likely that discussions will concern the potential consequences of a sector contraction, which could lead to layoffs: estimates range between 4,500 and 6,000 jobs, but some speculate that job losses could be double those numbers, affecting tour operators and sector operators alike.

On Friday, October 12, at 2 p.m., at the Palafiere in Riva, an open forum titled «International Emergency: How Tourism Reacts» will be held.
