Fish Die-Off in Sirmione: Interventions Underway at Ganfo Pilandro and Other Mouths
Fish kills have been reported in Sirmione in recent days at several locations, notably near the mouths of multiple ganfi. In a May 2, 2026 statement, the municipal administration said the phenomenon is under thorough investigation by the competent authorities, with ongoing measures to manage the situation and safeguard the environment and public health.
The events are not limited to the Ganfo Pilandro, and the killings are observed at the mouths of several ganfi. Early evidence points to reduced oxygen levels in shallow waters near the mouths, a condition likely worsened by scarce recent rainfall. Technical investigations are underway to determine the exact causes. Water samples and biological specimens have been collected and are under analysis at ARPA; authorities are coordinating with environmental and health control agencies, and carcasses are being removed to protect sanitary conditions and limit disruption to residents.
On the Ganfo Pilandro, maintenance and cleaning of the channel is being carried out by specialized firms. A targeted fish recovery program reintroduces captured fish into the lake under strict procedures, while invasive alien species in the habitat are disposed of to preserve the local ecological balance. The administration remains committed to constant monitoring and will share analysis results with citizens as soon as they are available.
