Floating Dock in Garda Under Construction to Improve Navigation Safety

The new floating dock funded by the province to quell the alarms from Navigation is taking shape in the eastern arm of the Rocca channel: and, as usual, the fifty meters seem much larger in reality than just the announced measurements.

In a few more days, the dock will be completed. It will then be attached to a boat and dragged towards the Rossa house.

Movement and position of the dock

Contrary to previous predictions, the mooring site has been moved north of the disused old cantonment, towards Riva. The floating structure will be placed parallel to the lakeside promenade, in a north-south direction, at the narrowing of the lakeside walk, where Garda recedes more rapidly and has already swallowed thousands of cubic meters of rocky debris from the tunnel.

The dock will remain about ten meters from the shore and will be connected to the land by three narrow, long gangways, positioned at the front, the rear, and the middle, intended for the boat personnel.

Stability and costs

Anchors will be secured with the stone and cement retaining wall of the old lakeside promenade and with ground attachments to ensure stability even during storms, as often happen in summer.

The cost of the structure, built by Sistema Walcon, a specialized company from Ferrara, amounts to 455 million euros; additional costs for moorings bring the total to approximately 600 million euros. The entire expense is covered by the province.

Current state and future of the old dock

The old dock will soon start to be submerged by debris discharged from the tunnel: the relocation of the poles is not planned, although they may still help hold the large mass of material dumped into the lake.

The Ags and the construction site are finalizing preliminary preparations.
