Franz Jörg Cycles From Germany to Sicily to Support Rare Disease Research
German firefighter veteran Franz Jörg has stopped in Riva del Garda during his bicycle journey from Germany to Sicily, using a local fire station for lodging before continuing south. The initiative is aimed at raising funds for research and support for families affected by rare pediatric diseases, including Tay-Sachs, Sandhoff, and GM1.
Jörg’s trip is part of a longer project that has already covered more than 70,000 kilometers in 2026, following tens of thousands of kilometers and three crossings of the United States. Since 2018, the effort has been supported by the Deutscher Feuerwehrverband, with fire stations along the route often providing overnight stops as each stretch of cycling contributes to fundraising for particularly serious childhood conditions.
