In conjunction with the National Headache Week, the second edition of the (H)Open Day Emicrania, promoted by the Onda ETS Foundation, will take place on May 27th. This initiative aims to raise public awareness about the importance of early diagnosis of migraine symptoms, promoting timely access to specific treatment paths and thus improving the quality of life of patients.

To celebrate Migraine Awareness Day, ASST Garda is offering free neurological consultations for women aged 16 and above. The consultations, lasting about 30 minutes each, will be held at the neurology outpatient clinic on the fifth floor of Desenzano del Garda Hospital. The consultations will start at 8:45 am.

Reservations are mandatory and can be made via email from May 20th to May 22nd, subject to availability. Interested individuals must send a request to the email address giornatadonna.desenzano@asst-garda.it.

“Migraine is a chronic condition that affects between 12% and 15% of the general population,” says Roberta Chiesa, General Director of ASST Garda. “This condition is more common in women than in men, with attacks affecting up to 17% of women and 6% of men each year.” Epidemiological studies highlight not only its high prevalence but also the significant socio-economic and personal impact it entails.

According to data provided by the World Health Organization (WHO), migraine is the third most common disease in the world and the second most disabling. This highlights the high human, social, and economic cost associated with the condition. Unfortunately, many people still perceive this condition as invisible.

Dr. Massimo Biacca, head of the Neurology Service at ASST Garda, explains, “Migraine is a complex and multifactorial neurological syndrome. The main symptom is a severe headache that can be unilateral and pulsating, often accompanied by nausea, vomiting, photophobia, or phonophobia.” The onset of migraine can be influenced by various factors such as hormones, the surrounding environment, genetic predisposition, or other systemic conditions. In some cases, it can be preceded by a set of visual or sensory symptoms known as migraine aura.

Therefore, the initiative on May 27th represents an important opportunity for women living in the Lake Garda area to obtain a free and qualified evaluation of their neurological health.
