Gabriele D’Annunzio’s Influence on Sports and National Identity

The blue jerseys of the national football team, which reignited the passion in sports enthusiasts’ hearts after their qualifying victories for the 2002 World Cup, are famously marked with the tricolor shield.

Few know that the artistic emblem in white, red, and green, which previously bore the colors of the Savoia dynasty, was not created by an ordinary vivid imagination, but by the Epitome of the Poet Laureate, the visionary Gabriele D’Annunzio.

Among his passions was a deep love for sports. From a young age, he practiced swimming, , , rode bicycles, kicked balls, and piloted cars, motorboats, and airplanes.

On August 9, 1918, with the Sva 10 biplane, he carried out a peace flight over Vienna; long before, in 1909, he participated in the Montichiari air circuit, the airport now named after him.

Retreating to his sanctuary in Gardone, after military and political battles, the Poet Laureate continued to love sport, becoming a pioneer of unforgettable rowing challenges, such as the celebrated Italian Rowing Challenges.

He also inaugurated the Coppa dell’Oltranza among powerful racers.
