Garda boosts water supplies for Mantua’s permanent meadows

Stable meadows in the Mantua area are receiving more water from Lake Garda as of 2 September, when the lake’s outflow was increased from 27 to 36 cubic metres per second to reduce the risk of drying caused by low rainfall. The water is directed to protected habitats managed without ploughing, maintained through mowing and fertilisation, and used to produce hay for dairy cattle in municipalities within the Mincio Park.

The higher releases were made possible through coordinated water management, allowing Garda to pass the dry season while still meeting drinking water, agricultural, tourism, industrial and environmental needs. The lake level stands at 58 centimetres above the hydrometric zero, with the basin filled at 45%, a decision aimed at supporting both local farming and the historically and environmentally significant Mantua meadows linked to the Sarca-Garda-Mincio system.
