Garda Carpione Rejected: M5S Proposal for Scientific Study Dismissed

The Lombardy Regional Council has rejected a proposed amendment to fund scientific research on the endangered carpione del Garda, an endemic fish species found only in Lake Garda. The amendment, submitted by Five Star Movement councillor Paola Pollini, would have allocated €50,000 for a study on the species’ conservation, included in the 2026–2028 regional budget adjustment law.

Pollini said the decision was inconsistent with existing funding for fish management. She noted that the adjustment includes an increase of €540,000 over the three-year period for the operation of fish hatcheries, alongside additional FEAMPA resources and other funds already available. In her view, before any restocking efforts, authorities should first investigate—through a structured scientific approach—the causes of the carpione’s decline and identify conservation strategies.
