Garda Castles and Churches: Over €100 Million to Restore 19 Historic Sites

A project by the Consorzio Lago di Garda Lombardia will enhance the castles and parish churches of Lake Garda, covering 19 historical and religious sites across Valtenesi and the upper lake. The initiative links landmarks in 13 municipalities, from Padenghe, Moniga, Soiano and Manerba to Salò, Gargnano, Tignale and Valvestino, offering two themed routes that can be travelled by car or bicycle. Its aim is to reduce fragmented information, redirect visitors to smaller towns, and promote slow, sustainable tourism.

The plan includes an interactive map, dynamic QR codes, digital fact sheets, 360-degree virtual tours and multimedia content. For each site, accessibility will be assessed in physical, sensory and informational terms, with inclusive routes, training for local operators, and activities for schools and libraries. The approved budget is €82,510, with 90% funded by a public non-repayable grant of €74,259, for a total investment of over €100,000 including VAT.
