Garda Lake Algae Motion Seeks Action to Protect Local Economy
It may be harmless, but Anabaena is disgusting. The city council session scheduled for August 10th will open with the examination of a motion, first signed by Paolo Matteotti and later supported by all group leaders.
Text of the motion
Here is the text, expected to receive unanimous approval: “The city council, recognizing the severity of the ‘yellow algae’ phenomenon associated with the extraordinary growth of the Anabaena algae, while being aware that the algal mass does not pose health risks and that bathing in the Garda Trentino remains safe; and being informed that this phenomenon results from the total mixing of waters (which also occurred in 1999, albeit on a lesser scale), considers that the persistence of this phenomenon during the current season and its recurrence in future years could severely harm the economy of Alto Garda and entire Benaco, as it damages the landscape and image of our waters. It commits the Giunta (Executive Committee) and the mayor to immediately engage all administrative and protection bodies of Lake Garda to verify, based on current knowledge, the factors contributing to algae development, the likelihood of the phenomenon repeating, and possible interventions to restore the natural appearance of Benaco.”
