Garda Lake Cleanup: Verona Divers Tackle Seabed Pollution Initiative
A morning of work both above and below the water to clean the Garda seabed and beaches. This is the initiative organized by the Explorer Sub Club of Verona in Torri on Sunday morning starting at 10 a.m., at Punta Caval locality.
A largely environmental event, expected to involve over seventy people, who will turn into genuine “garbage collectors” of Garda for the occasion. “This initiative — explained one of the event organizers, scuba instructor Silvia Mombello — aims to be a moment when we reclaim Garda and its environment, removing all the waste that people often abandon or throw on the beaches and into the lake.
Objectives and activities of the event
The day organized by our club, which, although based in Verona, operates in Torri from April to December, is part of a global project by the Project Aware foundation. The goal is also, and mainly, to better introduce Garda Lake to the residents themselves and to raise awareness among locals and tourists about respecting the seabed, as well as its flora and fauna.
This is the only way to make people understand how much damage is caused by abandoning all kinds of waste around. On Sunday, divers will clean a stretch of coast and seabed from the monument to the Fallen to the Baia dei Pini and Punta Caval, north of the town.
Closure and awards
By around 1 p.m., there will be a collection of everything found and a refreshment at a kiosk on the beach. In the early afternoon, awards will be given and participation certificates distributed.
“We appeal to everyone who wants to dedicate a few hours to cleaning the lake, since we will go down to a depth of four to five meters, and even beginner divers will be able to participate in the collection. The event should be the first step towards an environmental education effort to be brought into schools. Starting exactly with the school in Torri, where we already requested a meeting with teachers,”
Political awareness and regional involvement
Finally, according to unconfirmed reports, on Sunday morning the regional assessor for Public Works and Land Defense, Massimo Giorgetti, passionate about this sport and quite sensitive to the initiatives and proposals of diving clubs, is expected to also participate in the seabed cleaning operations.
