Garda Old Port Expansion Plans Under Region’s Proposed Management
The port area is set to undergo a transformation. The old port will increase the number of its boat slips, while the mooring pier for boats in front of Villa Albertini will be extended.
This is at least according to the plans of the Municipal Administration and the Veneto Region. Starting with the old port. “The current arrangement of moorings around the structure, combined with the width of the port, leads us to believe that Garda’s port is underutilized,” reads a report from the municipal technical office.
Therefore, to make the most of the port area and simultaneously rationalize the moorings, a project has been developed that involves installing floating berths, which would significantly increase the number of available boat slips.
The entire project is expected to cost around 400 million euros, but with an important goal: to gain management of the port directly from the Region. “We have asked the Veneto Region,” confirms Mayor Giorgio Comencini, “to take over the management of Garda’s old port.”
If our request is granted, we could ensure more consistent cleaning and maintenance of the port area, and improve control over the use of boat slips.” The request made by Garda’s Municipality is not unfounded: on the other side of Lake Garda, municipal management of the port facilities is already a reality.
The Lombardy Region has already transferred responsibilities by drafting a program agreement for delegating functions related to lake port management to local authorities.
