Garda Security Boost: Crackdowns and New Investments

Safety on Lake Garda was at the center of a Senate question time on 25 July 2026, with Transport Minister Matteo Salvini reporting on illegal driving, traffic conditions and mobility on the lake. In recent checks in the Province of Verona, authorities inspected 561 vehicles and found 87 violations, issued two driving licence withdrawals and imposed six administrative stops. The issue is linked in particular to illegal car meet-ups and dangerous behaviour along the Gardesana, a heavily trafficked road during the tourist season, including after incidents reported in Peschiera del Garda and Caprino Veronese.

The Government also announced funding aimed at improving road and lake safety. It earmarked €650,000 for new rockfall barriers between Bardolino and Garda, around €3 million for consolidating existing rockfall protection works on the Brescia stretch of State Road 4, and €600,000 for routine maintenance. The programme includes a €126 million tunnel bypass between Gargnano and Tignale, as well as a €110 million plan to add new fast boats and strengthen lake navigation to reduce car traffic.
