Garda Trentino Restocking and Conservation Efforts in Lake Fisheries
The fishing activity in Garda Trentino is notably lower than that of the lower lake, which the province attributes, among other factors, to a reduced restocking effort.
After twenty years, in collaboration with Veneto, restocking efforts in the lake have resumed according to an annual program. Before the end of 2000, 4,000 pike of 6 to 9 centimeters, 50,000 bleak (about 2 quintals), 4,000 carp of 9 to 12 centimeters, and the same amount of tench of 6 to 9 centimeters will have been released.
The program foresees, for the following two years, an increase in the amount of bleak stocked (up to 4 quintals in 2002), and nearly constant doses of pike and tench.
Furthermore, the province’s good intentions are not limited to the relatively modest expenditure of 21 million fry, but also include initiatives aimed at recovering, as far as possible, the conditions for the autonomous development of fish fauna.
Restoration and protection projects for the species
This is the case of the inspection carried out by provincial officials and technicians from Enel to assess the possibility of restoring a spawning ramp for lake trout at Torbole, which needs to ascend the river to find suitable conditions for laying eggs.
From October to December, a ban on net setting is in effect at the Sarca estuaries, to facilitate the potential upstream migration of trout.
For lake fish and bleak, artificial reproduction is considered, followed by restocking. Additionally, portions of sandy shoreline will be fenced to allow spawning of bleak, reed beds will be reconstructed, and algae will be managed to support pike populations.
