Gardesana Road Closure: Mountain Clearing and Repair Work Near Limone

Work is continuing at full speed in two locations along the western Gardesana, just a few kilometers apart. Just south of Limone, a team of rock climbers is clearing the cliff of the mountain that collapsed last week (approximately 3,000 cubic meters of material). The specialists are operating at a significant height, around 150 meters above the level of the underlying state road, to remove still-dangerous material.

In practice, if a section of the debris at the top were to be dislodged by the ropes to which the workers are anchored and fall downwards, it could pose problems and dangers to the operatives themselves. For this reason, a net is being installed at the top to hold the loose earth and facilitate safer operations for the rock climbers.

Roadworks and reopening schedule

Only once the mountain face has been completely cleared will work on the road begin, and it will first be necessary to assess the extent of damage to the roadway. So far, this has not yet been possible precisely because of the material covering the part of the road that remains in place: the rest has fallen into Garda Lake.

Regarding the timing for reopening the Gardesana at this point, the geologist believes that vehicle transit might be allowed just before Christmas. However, this remains a hypothesis pending more concrete information. An opening during the Immaculate Conception holiday (December 8-10) seems unlikely for now.

Work is also underway near the Hotel Forbisicle (before the Campione tunnel, traveling from Salò to Riva), with the lane closed from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm and from 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm on weekdays. These works had been planned well in advance and are expected to be completed by mid-January.
