Gardesana Road Safety: Meeting Leaders Discuss Long-Term Solutions

Today marks the start of the… journey of hope: from Garda to Rome. Local administrators (including some mayors, municipal councilors, and representatives from the Comunità Montana Parco, hoteliers) will fly to the capital for a meeting at the Ministry of Public Works.

Meeting on Gardesana

The topic on the table: the Gardesana. The scheduled time for the meeting is at 5 pm. It is a delicate moment that could play a decisive role for the road connecting Lake Garda in Brescia to Trentino.

In fact, while it is possible that Minister Nerio Nesi may not be present at the assembly, it is confirmed that Undersecretary Antonio Bargone will attend. Representatives from the two provinces will voice Gardesana’s concerns: for Brescia, the Councillor for Public Works, Mauro Parolini.

The lineup also includes Bruno Faustini (President of the Alto Garda Comunità Montana) and Pier Emidio Baldassarri (Public Works Councillor in the Comunità and Limone), Manlio Bonincontri (Mayor of Tignale), Antonio Moro (leader of the minority group in the Comunità Montana). All hope not to return empty-handed after overcoming the initial difficulty – securing the meeting at the Ministry – thanks to the involvement of Brescia deputy Aldo Rebecchi.

Everyone agrees on addressing the issue at its root: as it stands, the road can no longer handle the traffic volume nor guarantee the necessary safety, as repeatedly landslides are showing.

Position and Proposals

On the other hand, it is not feasible to intervene by closing the Gardesana without considering the effects on the local economy, which is heavily tourism-based and consequently dependent on transit. In this regard, the idea of a long-term closure is regarded as unrealistic by Brescia’s administrators and economic operators, as well as by the municipalities of Riva and Torbole, which would face parking difficulties and more.

In recent weeks, all meetings have led to the usual result, which might be the one conveyed to Rome: to immediately think about building a new Gardesana, thus definitively closing the matter; meanwhile, however, it is necessary to ensure transit on the current route, implementing proper safety measures.

A similar stance should be taken by the Province of Trento to promptly restore safe transit on the Gardesana, only considering the planned tunnel (1250 meters within the Rocchetta) as a second step.

Tomorrow evening at 9 pm, an meeting with local operators is scheduled in the conference room of Limone to discuss the outcome of the Rome meeting.
