Sunday 20 September in Gardone Riviera marked the end of a lake-bottom clean-up day in Lake Garda organised by Deep Explorers Onlus in collaboration with DNA from Mantua. Forty-two scuba divers entered the water, supported by 15 volunteers on land. Six diving clubs took part, with groups arriving from Merano, Milan, Bergamo, Mantua and Brescia, along with a vessel from the Guardia Costiera and a boat provided by the organisers.
The day was characterised by an encouraging result: the amount of material recovered suggests that repeated interventions are gradually reducing waste in the lake. Among the more unusual items found were a drone recovered by divers from Bergamo and a concrete support used for a large beach umbrella. Work is set to continue after the clean-up, with the recovered material to be used in environmental education in the coming days, including opportunities for primary school children to observe the waste collected from the Garda.
