From July 12th to December 1st, 2024, the Brescia Castle and the Santa Giulia Museum will be transformed into exceptional settings to celebrate the work of Brescia sculptor Giuseppe Bergomi. The exhibition, part of the sculpture project promoted by the Brescia Musei Foundation, extends between the spaces of the castle and the UNESCO Corridor, in continuity with the initiatives of the past three years.
The exhibition traces Bergomi’s artistic career starting from his debut in 1978 at the Galleria dell’Incisione in Brescia, where he presented a series of paintings. Among these, the “Family Portrait” stands out, which opens the current exhibition.
In 1982, at the Galleria dell’Incisione, Bergomi exhibited his first polychrome terracotta sculptures dedicated to his wife Alma. This period marks the beginning of his exploration into figurative sculpture.
Among the works on display are “Sleeping Bather” (1991) and “Large Nude of an Adolescent” (1991), representative of the phase in which Bergomi abandons the vibrant colors of his terracottas to approach ancient traditions, especially Etruscan.
From the 2000s, Bergomi further evolves his technique by transitioning from terracotta to bronze. This change marks a new era in his artistic production, which includes works such as “Interior of a Bathroom with a Female Figure” (2001), “Self-Portrait” (2004), and the majestic “Ellipse,” exhibited in the outdoor spaces of the Santa Giulia Museum.
The most recent works reflect a direct confrontation with public statuary. Notable examples are “Men, Dolphins, Parallelepipeds,” created in 2000 for the Nagoya Aquarium in Japan, and the monument dedicated to Cristina Trivulzio di Belgiojoso in Milan.
The exhibition culminates with two extraordinary pieces: “Africa with Cello,” presented at the 2011 Venice Biennale, and the unpublished “Breakfast in Bed” (2024), a tribute to the three generations of the artist’s family: wife, daughters, and grandchildren.
