High water on Lake Garda: weather forecasts and impacts

High water levels in the lake with levels at the limit and adverse weather forecasts: the situation is critical. In recent days, the level of Lake Garda has exceeded 130 centimeters above the hydrometric zero in Peschiera, reaching 135 yesterday, just a few centimeters below the conventional maximum of 140. This value represents the amount of water that can be artificially regulated through the Salionze dam, in a context where the lake holds approximately 50 billion cubic meters of water. The recent rise in levels is attributed to increased inflows from the Sarca River and secondary tributaries, along with a reduced outflow into the Mincio due to extraordinary maintenance work.

In response to the situation, authorities have increased the discharge volumes from the dam, raising them from 30 to 85 cubic meters per second, while disturbances are expected to continue until March 15. To ensure optimal water management, several construction sites along the Mincio have been suspended, with a planned reopening between Monday and Tuesday. The irrigation season appears promising compared to previous years, but the secretary of the Garda Community has urged AiPo to maintain higher outflows in light of the scheduled operation to test the devices of the Adige-Garda tunnel, which will result in further inflow into the lake.
